He was a miller and distiller by trade. In company with his brother George and Doctor Knight, he drilled 31 oil wells in Clarion Co., PA; in company with his brothers George and Jerry has drilled 74 wells (105 total) - 96 of which were good-producing wells. In company with his brother George, William had a patent on solid rim bull wheels. He and his brother George had eight US patents, mostly relating to the oil business (from 1890 History of Venango Co., pp 1123-1124)
