General Notes: Husband - John Kratzer

He was born in Northampton County, Pennsylvania. About 1835 he came to Clarion County and located in Porter township, where he cleared a large acreage.

He was a farmer whose industry and good judgment placed him in a prominent position in the agricultural community in which he lived. In addition to his occupation as farmer he learned the trade of stonemason. For his skill in the carving of ornamental gravestones and monuments he was well known far and wide. His work gave evidence of an artistic talent and feeling that, had his lot been cast in other than strenuous pioneer days, would have brought him the opportunity of leaving a name as a sculptor of note. Like many agriculturalists he believed that the best interests of the country were conserved by the principles of the Democratic party, and under its standards he voted all his life. [GPHAV, 587]

At the outbreak of the Civil War his family was divided in its political views, some of its members adhering with all the vehemence of a very resolute stock of men to the Union and its republican ideals, while others pledged themselves to the doctrine of states' rights. Daniel Krotzer and one of his sons enlisted in the Confederate army, whilst two other sons of Daniel entered the Union army. Reuben and Henry J. also were in the Union army. Jacob's son, Isaiah Frank, an account of whom follows, was anxious to go to the scene of war, and would have gone but for the determined resistance of his parents. An idea of the intensity of political feeling at that time may be gained from the fact that a boy of ten had to be detained almost forcibly at home by his parents.
