He was the principal of the Orphans' Home, near Zelienople, Butler County, Pennsylvania.

Civil War: In 1862 he enlisted in Beaver town-ship, Clarion County, in Company G, 155th P. V. I., for three years or during the war, was commissioned second lieutenant, and as a mem-ber of the Army of the Potomac participated in all the battles of his regiment.
