General Notes: Husband - George Pohl

He received a thorough education in the schools of Breslau, Prussia, and after leaving school served for two years in the Prussian army. When the war of the rebellion broke out in the United States he took passage for New York and landed January 26, 1863, and enlisted in the Union army, January 31, 1863, becoming a member of Company D, First New York Volunteer Engineers, attached to Light Battery M, First United States Artillery. As Mr. Pohl had become quite proficient in the English language before leaving home, and as he had had experience in the Prussian army, he was a valuable recruit. He was engaged in the following battles: Olustee, Florida; Howlett's House, Virginia; intrenchments near Bermuda Hundred; Petersburg, Virginia, and New Market Heights, Virginia. In a letter from Loomis L. Langdon, Captain First United States Artillery, is this statement in reference to George Pohl: "He is brave, honest, faithful, and sober, and it will be advantageous to any one so disposed to employ him where such qualities are of service."
