His father was born in Germany, but left the "Fatherland" and crossed the Atlantic to seek his fortune in the "new world." He landed on the shores of America and settled in Pennsylvania at the age of fifteen years.

He was born in the beautiful and historic Ligonier Valley of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he followed his trade of shoemaking, which was in early days more lucrative than the mercantile business.
