He was by trade a miller, which occupation he followed for nearly a quarter of a century. During this time, by strict attention to business and careful investment of his savings, he secured for himself a competency sufficient to enable him to retire from the active pursuits of life. He then resided at Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he owned considerable real estate. He was a democrat in political faith and a member of the Baptist church.
