He graduated from Jefferson College with the honors of his class, was a brilliant scholar as a young man, and was professor of Latin and Greek in Lafayette College and the University of Georgia, at Athens, where he became a fast friend of Senator King, one of Georgia's greatest ante-bellum statesmen. He was also professor in the college at Athens, Ohio. He was afterwards admitted to the bar of Pittsburgh where he practiced his profession, and was head of the Pittsburgh bar for a number of years. He received the honorary degree of LL. D. from the Western University of Pennsylvania.
