Although he was only eighteen years of age when he came to America, he had a common-school education and had provided himself with a self-supporting trade, having learned to be a cabinet-maker in his native place. He found his first home in Forest County, Pennsylvania, where he worked as a cabinet-maker and builder, following the same later at Titusville and Warren, where he also became interested in oil. He came to Butler in 1873 and soon engaged in general contracting and building. For about seven years he was associated with George McJunkin. For a number of years he had limited oil, coal and real-estate interests, in and around Butler.
