He was associated in business with his father for a number of years, and was subsequently interested in the stock business with his uncle Peter Riddle. As he went into business on his own account he continued farming and stock buying, and in 1901 he removed to a farm of 110 acres in Rayne township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, which he owned and on which he then resided. He did so well in his business operations that he was able to acquire another tract, in South Mahoning township. He was one of the respected citizens of his township, and was elected to the office of road supervisor. He and his wife were members of the Rayne Presbyterian Church.
