He was taken into his adoptive parents' home when a few days old, his mother having died at his birth. He was well educated, being a student of State College, and when he entered business life was given a place in the Bleakley Bank at Franklin, Pennsylvania, several years later accepting a position as cashier of the Citizens National Bank at New Castle, Pennsylvania.
