General Notes: Husband - Chess Lamberton

He obtained his early education in the public schools of his birthplace, where he passed his boyhood and was reared. He pursued the higher branches of learning at the Kiskiminetas Springs School, Saltsburg, Pennsylvania; he attended Grove City College for two years, and followed with a course at the Eastman Business College, Poughkeepsie, New York. Returning to Franklin he began banking at the bottom rung as messenger in the Lamberton National Bank, founded by Hon. Robert Lamberton. He rose step by step, leaving nothing which could add to his experience untried, until he was made assistant cashier. In 1903 he was elected cashier of the bank; and in 1919 he was further advanced to the office of vice-president, which he now holds. To this were added the duties of trust officer of the trust department when this department was installed. His banking interests, in addition to those in Franklin, included a membership on the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Ohio, and president and director of the First National Bank of Cochranton, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Lamberton was the proudest, however, of his achievements as chairman of the General Liberty Loan Commission of Venango County, and as chairman of the War Savings Committee of Venango County during the World War. He was secretary and treasurer and a director of the Dick Sand Company of Franklin, operating a plant near Polk, Pennsylvania, which cost upwards of $100,000. Mr. Lamberton served two years as president of the Franklin Board of Trade, since renamed the Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Myrtle Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, of Franklin; of Pittsburgh Consistory, thirty-second degree, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite; and of Zem Zem Temple, Ancient Arabic Order, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, of Erie, Pennsylvania. He was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; of the Franklin Club, the Washington Club; the Wanango Country Club, and the Venango Club of Oil City. He was a Republican in politics, and a member of the Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Lamber-ton was born and reared at Franklin, Pennsylvania, and obtained his early education in the public schools of the city. He pursued his higher studies at the Kiskiminetas Springs School, Saltsburg, and later attended Grove City College for two years, following with a course in the Eastman business college at Poughkeepsie, New York. Upon his graduation from the latter he came back to Franklin and entered the Lamberton National Bank as messenger, filling all the positions from that grade upward in regular order until he became assistant cashier. Since August, 1903, he has been cashier of the bank, and he is further associated with banking operations in this section of Pennsylvania as president and director of the First National Bank of Cochranton, Crawford County, and director of the Lamberton National Bank of Oil City. He is secretary and treasurer and one of the directors of the Dick Sand Company of Franklin, who operate a hundred thousand dollar plant near Polk, Pennsylvania. Mr. Lamberton is one of the most prominent business men in Franklin, and has been a strong force in directing local interests along the lines of modern progress. He served two years as president of the Franklin Board of Trade, and in that and every other capacity has done his utmost to promote desirable conditions in the city, whether of business or social order. He is a leading member of the most popular social organizations of the city and county, belonging to the Franklin Club, Wash-ington Club, Venango Club, Wanango Club of Oil City and the B. P. O. Elks, as well as the Masonic fraternity. In the latter connection he is affiliated with Myrtle Lodge, No. 316, F. & A. M., of Franklin, Pittsburgh Consistory, thirty-second degree, and Zem Zem Temple, Mystic Shrine, at Erie, Pa. Mr. Lamberton is unmarried. [CAB, 460]

He attended Franklin public schools, then went to Kiskiminetas Springs Academy, at Saltsburg, Pennsylvania, and to Grove City College, in Grove City. After two years of college training there, he took a thorough business course at the famous Eastman Business College, in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he was graduated. His first work in the Lamberton National Bank was as messenger, and thereafter he climbed the ladder of banking service step by step, acquiring a complete and detailed knowledge of banking operations and equipping himself in the only possible sound way for the career that was to be his. At length he was made assistant cashier of the bank, then cashier in 1903, succeeding W. L. Gilfillan.
As he came to exert ever more influence in the banking organization, he was instrumental in effecting certain changes for the better. Among these was the erection of a new and finer bank building, which the bank occupied in July, 1912. This building, referred to as "the monument to the name of Lamberton," was situated at Thirteenth and Liberty streets. Chess Lamberton continued for many years as cashier of the institution, then in 1919 was advanced to vice-president and trust officer. In September, 1932, he was elected to the president's chair. In addition to his work with the Franklin bank, Mr. Lamberton was a Class A director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Ohio, for eighteen years, retiring in 1938, and president and a director of the First National Bank of Cochranton, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.
Quite outside the realm of banking, he served as a director and vice-president of the Joy Manufacturing Company and is affiliated with other commercial and industrial establishments. Fraternally he was connected with the Free and Accepted Masons, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Loyal Order of Moose. In the Masonic fraternity he was affiliated with Myrtle Lodge, No. 316, of Franklin; Pittsburgh Consistory, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite; and Zem Zem Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, of Erie. He held the thirty-second degree. Other organizations with which he was associated include the Franklin Chamber of Commerce, of which he was for two years president; the Washington Club; the Franklin Club; and the Wanango Country Club, of Reno. Politically he was a Republican. During the World War he served as chairman of the General Liberty Loan Committee and chairman of the War Savings Stamp Committee of Venango County. Previously he was connected for some years with the National Guard of Pennsylvania, in which he rose from private to lieutenant-colonel and assistant adjutant-general of the division, finally being retired with the full colonel's rank. He was a Presbyterian in his religious affiliation.
