He was born in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, was there educated, and studied law, and early in 1841 settled in Franklin, Venango County, where the records of the Court of Common Pleas bear evidence that as early as April 10th of that year he was engaged in practice as an attorney of that Court, and so continued, with an interval of a few years spent in Florida, until failing health compelled him to retire.
Soon after his admission to the Venango bar he was elected district attorney, in which office he served one year. In 1853 Venango county presented his name to the Democratic judicial convention in the 18th district as a candidate for the office of president judge, but John S. McCalmont, having been appointed by the governor to fill a vacancy in that office and having the endorsement of the other counties in the district, was nominated and elected. In 1854 he received the Democratic nomination in Venango County for the Legislature, but went down with his party under the assault of "knownothingism."
He died leaving a widow and one son.
