General Notes: Husband - Aaron Franklin Landis

He was born at Penn Station, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and during his boyhood attended the public schools of that borough. At one time he was employed as clerk in a general store, pursuing his studies in leisure hours during the day and in the evenings. At eighteen he passed the county school teachers' examination and taught two terms in Hempfield township and one year in Penn borough. Previous to this he studied shorthand, and when twenty-one years of age entered the service of the firm of McKee & Brother, glass manufacturers, and remained with their successors, the National Glass Company, making in all a period of thirteen years. During the last three years of this time he held the position of head clerk. For three years he pursued the study of the higher branches under the private instruction of Professor J. C. Hoch. March 7, 1901, while still engaged at the glass works, he opened a job printing establishment in Jeannette, and on November 12, 1902, founded the Westmoreland Journal, severing his connection with the Glass Company on December 1, 1902. At one time he held the office of county treasurer.
