During the Civil War he enlisted, August, 1864, in the Mississippi Squadron, United States Navy. He received an honorable discharge August, 1865.
After living a few years in Centreville, Pennsylvania, he and his wife settled on another place, comprised of eighty-five acres of well-improved land. He was a progressive farmer, devoting considerable attention to the improvement of the live stock on his farm. He was a member of the Congregational Church and his wife of the Methodist Episcopal denomination. In politics he was a stanch Republican.
