General Notes: Husband - Stephen Ridinger, Jr.

After completing his studies in the district schools, he learned the trade of blacksmith in Harrison City, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and in 1857 came to Irwin to take charge of the Westmoreland Coal Company and Pennsylvania Railroad Company repair works, continuing the same until 1868, in the meantime conducting a private business of his own. In the latter named year he engaged in the hardware business under the firm name of Ridinger and Fritchman, dealers in hardware and furniture, and this connection continued until 1873, when he disposed of his interest in the same. Mr. Ridinger then engaged in the dry goods and grocery business, first under the style of S. Ridinger, and later as S. Ridinger and Son, which obtained until about 1893, when he retired from active business life. In addition to this line of business he handled considerable real estate, erecting several properties in the borough, of Irwin. Politically he was a Republican, but was liberal in his views and exercised his franchise in accordance with the principles involved and the character of the candidates. In religious matters he was a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and with his wife was a charter member of the First Methodist Episcopal church, and for many years a member of the official board. He was a liberal contributer to all church charities, and assisted materially in the building of churches and the extension of the gospel. He was always ready to co-operate with all enterprises that had for their object the best interests of the community, was a man of large and generous heart, and left behind him as a priceless heritage an untarnished name.
