General Notes: Husband - George Selders

He served as a private in the 13th Pennsylvania Regiment under Captain Scott and Colonel Stewart.

He, with others, was kidnapped when about ten years of age. He was taken to the north of Ireland, whence he was brought to America without returning to his native land.
He was indentured to a Mr. Baird in Philadelphia, PA. He remained with the Bairds until he was twenty. In the meantime the family had moved to Lancaster, PA. He went to Maryland, married, and went to Chestnut Ridge in what later became Westmoreland County, PA. A stone house was erected in 1792 and in the gable there was a stone with the inscription G. & A. S. 1792. All of his ten children were born in that stone house which stood on the farm.
The Indians were numerous and hostile, and on seven occasions he and his family took refuge in Fort Ligonier. They were more fortunate than many of their neighbors, in that they were never captured or injured in any way.
He lived to an age of 104 years. He, with his wife, is buried in the Keltz graveyard about four miles from Ligonier. He was one of the earliest settlers on the ridge.
After the death of his wife he divided the "stone house" farm between his two youngest children, Nancy and Benjamin. After Nancy's death the farm was sold to meet a mortgage amounting to $700 that had been placed upon it.
His wife was the step-daughter of a Mr. Henthill, the wealthiest man in his section of Maryland. When she wanted to marry George Selders, her step-father objected because George was poor. As a result they eloped. After their marriage he mounted his wife and all their possessions on a horse and started for the wilds of western Pennsylvania in 1763. This was only a few years after Braddock's defeat and the Indians were hostile. As they traveled, he, having been in the region before to spy out the land, told his wife of two places, one of which they might select, and asked her to choose. One was the mouth of the Youghiogheny river, the other on the eastern slope of the Chestnut Ridge. She did not wish to decide and had not made a choice when they arrived at the fork where they had to choose. She made the remark 'let the horse decide'. Letting the bridle hang loose, the horse turned into the Chestnut Ridge trail. Shortly after, the Indians raided the Youghiogheny settlement and killed all the settlers. [Allison Genealogy]
