He was a prosperous farmer, making his home in the house which was erected by his father in 1835. He held the office of clerk of the township, assessor, tax collector and clerk of elections. He was a member of the Reformed church, in which he served as elder, deacon and trustee, and in which he was for twenty-five years superintendent of the Sunday school.
