Cross Creek Twp, Washington Co, PA - a farmer

He attended the district schools and then took a business course in Duff's Commercial College, at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he was graduated. From the age of twenty-two years he was interested in farm pursuits. For many years he gave much attention to the sheep industry and found it profitable. He was one of the organizers of the Washington National Bank at Burgettstown and was a large stockholder. In his early political life he was a Whig, but when the Republican party was organized he became identified with it. He frequently served as a member of the board of education, as supervisor and judge of elections and for four years was school treasurer.
