He was a native of County Antrim, Ireland, who was of Scotch descent.

He came to America with his parents when a small boy; his parents settled in York County, Pennsylvania, and died there.

Five brothers of this family, of Scotch-Irish extraction, emigrated to America in the latter part of the eighteenth century. James Leeper did not stop in York County, Pennsylvania, as did his four brothers, but came farther west, locating for a time in Washington County, and subsequently at Frankfort, Beaver County. [There seems to be some confusion in the source as to which generation was the immigrant to America.]
