General Notes: Husband - John M. Leighty

He resided on his father's farm during his childhood and early youth, until he reached the age of nineteen. He then removed with his wife, whom he had just married, to the Ruff farm. This place consisted of ninety-eight acres of land and was always kept in the highest state of cultivation by Mr. Leighty. He also built a new brick dwelling house thereon, on the site of the original log cabin, which had stood there from the earliest pioneer days. Mr. Leighty formed an association with F. V. Perry, of Scottdale, and the two men purchased a farm of one hundred and twenty-five acres in the neighborhood. This they have operated in partnership, carrying on there general farming there for some twenty years. They successfully bred Percheron horses for draft purposes, and also for breeding purposes, selling their stock to many studs in that region. They disposed of their colts at the age of two years, at which time they weighed eighteen hundred pounds, more or less. For these animals, with their weight of nearly a ton each, Messrs. Leighty & Perry received from six hundred to seven hundred dollars apiece. The major portion of their stock was sent to Ohio. In addition to the horses they dealt extensively in cattle and always kept a carload of steers, which they fattened with home grown alfalfa and then sold to the local markets. They were very scientific farmers and kept the land in the highest state of cultivation, using large quantities of lime and manure. In addition to the very remunerative farming which was done on the surface of their land, the two partners also operated successfully some large coal deposits below the surface.
Mr. Leighty was a member of the School Board and did much for the cause of education in the neighborhood. He served as a judge of horses at the Ohio State Fair, which was held at Columbus, and exhibited his own stock at many local fairs with a high degree of success. He was connected with the Farms Bureau, which was concerned with the breeding of Chester White Hogs.
Although as a young man Mr. Leighty took a business course in college, he devoted the whole of his time and attention to farming. In politics he was a Democrat, like his father before him, but was too busy with his occupations to take any part in local politics.
was a member of the Reformed
church at Ruffs Dale, and has been an elder thereof for many years, succeeding his
father in this office.
