General Notes: Husband - James Westerman

He was born in the city of Paris, France, of English parentage, of Alsatian descent.
He received his early educational training in Paris, France, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1838 he entered the Kensington Iron Works as an operative. Four years later he assisted in building the Onondaga Iron Works, at New Castle, Pennsylvania, and in 1846 superintended the construction of the Iron Works of Reis, Brown & Berger, of the same place. In 1855, in connection with Joseph Brown, William Bonnell and others, he purchased the Mahoning Iron Works, at Youngstown, Ohio, remaining there until 1861, when in company with William Coleman, C. B. Wick and P. W. Keller, he bought the Sharon Iron Works of General Curtis. These works were known as the Westerman Iron Co. from 1865 until March, 1874, when he withdrew from the concern. In 1872 he was elected vice-president of the First National Bank, but later withdrew and in 1875 helped to organize the Sharon National Bank, and held the same position in that until 1878, when he was elected president, and was annually re-elected until his death. A few years before his death Mr. Westerman became largely interested in the coal fields of the eastern part of Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and became a partner of five coal-operating firms, holding valuable properties elsewhere.
Mr. Westerman was the inventor and patentee of several inventions of great value to the manufacturers of iron, including a boat spike machine, etc. Along with his patented articles may be named his puddling furnace, smoke consumer and coal-cutting machine. He was a determined character and enterprising to a remarkable degree. Through the passing years of his active career he accumulated a large fortune, which was handed down to his children.
Politically, Mr. Westerman was a radical Republican, and the elector from his district on the Grant and Colfax ticket in 1868. [HMC 1909, 378]
