His descent is from a Puritan ancestry, which, coming from England, settled near Stonington, Connecticut, in the early history of the country.
He belonged to a branch of the family which established themselves at Easthampton, Long Island, about the time of the American Revolution.

He and his wife were the parents of ten sons and four daughters, all of whom lived to mature life.
