General Notes: Husband - Dr. John Alexander Letherman, M.D.

After attending the home schools he entered Waynesburg College, and one year later came to the normal school at California, Pennsylvania, remaining there two years. He then went to Long Island College Hospital at Brooklyn, New York, graduating in 1873, and finally took a course at Bellevue Medical College, receiving his degree of M. D. in 1874. After his professional training was completed, Dr. Letherman came to California, Pennsylvania, in July, 1874, and entered into partnership with Dr. James McDonough (his preceptor), who died not long afterward, in the practice of medicine. After the death of his colleague, Dr. Letherman filled his place, and acquired a large practice.
Politically, he was a stanch Republican, and served his borough as a member of the council and school board.

He was reared on the farm in West Bethlehem Township, and after a preliminary education in the district schools, attended Waynesburg College and the Normal School at California, after which he taught one term in Somerset Township, Washington County. He then began the study of medicine with Dr. James McDonough, of California, and in 1874 graduated from the Bellevue Hospital Medical College of New York City, after which time he was continuously and successfully engaged in the practice of his profession at California, Pennsylvania. Dr. Letherman was a member of the council for the greater part of thirty years, and for a time served as president of that body. He was a member of the Royal Arcanum, and also of the Century Club, which was the leading literary club of the Upper Monongahela Valley, and he was often called upon to prepare papers pertaining to his profession to be read before this club.
