He came from Ireland and settled in Washington County, Pennsylvania. In one of the British and Indian wars in which he was engaged he was captured and confined in a British fort for about a year. One day a British officer, by inquiry, learned that he had nursed McFarlane when an infant in Ireland, whereupon he issued an order releasing him.
