He learned the tailor trade and worked at it in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. His sister, Sarah, kept house for him until they both married.
He was later a merchant tailor in Stark County, Ohio.

Emma married a Mr. Butler and they had two children, Lula and Carle. She died in Indianapolis, Indiana, but was buried in Columbus, Ohio.
