He came from near Mendham, New Jersey, with his two brothers, Caleb and Demas, and was among the first settlers in Morris township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, coming about the year 1780 [or 1788].

He moved to Washington County, Pennsylvania, September, 1788, having been preceded by his brother Demas in 1773. His brother Caleb also came about the same time; they became large land owners on the middle fork of Ten-Mile Creek, now Morris Township.
