After attending the district school, he completed his education at Burns Academy, Good Hope, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.
He and his wife resided on the mansion farm, which had been in the possession of the family for three generations. He had a fine place of 140 acres of fertile and well improved land. He was a life-long Republican in politics. His wife was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Carlisle.
