He was born in Bradford township, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, and was indebted to its district schools for his educational privileges. Throughout his active business career he was principally engaged in farming and lumbering, and also owned and operated a mill in Bradford township.
After his marriage, he opened up a farm in Bradford township, where he made his home until his removal to Clearfield in 1882. His death occurred in that city some years later. He took an active and prominent part in public affairs, and always supported the Democratic party by his ballot.
