He passed his youth on the home place in Chartiers township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and received his education at the public schools of Canonsburg.
The first years of his married life were passed on the home place, then in 1891 they settled in Canonsburg.
He was a prominent stockman, and for many years raised registered sheep and Shorthorn cattle. He was a member of the Western Pennsylvania Agricultural Association. Politically he voted the Republican ticket, and served as school director. He was an earnest member of the United Presbyterian Church, of which he was a trustee for many years.
