He was educated in the public schools of his native town, and was subsequently employed as a clerk in his father's store. He soon after engaged in the hardware and tin trade, and in 1881 embarked in general merchandising. In 1891 he was appointed postmaster of Saxonburg. He and his wife were mem­bers of the Evangelical Lutheran church, and in politics, he was an ardent Republican.
