He attended the public schools and worked in the lumber woods of Clarion County, Pennsylvania, later becoming a lumber estimator and buyer. He owned a shingle mill in ]Marionville,?] Clarion County which he operated for a time. In 1906 he came to Butler, Pennsylvania, and was in charge of the lumber department of the Standard Steel Car Company.
He was a Democrat in politics and held various township offices. Both he and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church.
