Toward the close of the 1700s he set out with his brothers, James and Nathaniel, from their home in Essex County, New Jersey, for French Creek, in northwestern Pennsylvania. He and Nathaniel settled in the western part of Crawford County, but the country was too wild and desolate and marshy, and they soon removed to Redstone.
