In early life he learned the blacksmith's trade in Mercer, PA, and soon after settled in Cambridge, Ohio, where he spent the remainder of his life. He worked at his trade till 1877 when he became entirely blind. He was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church and took a live interest in all public interests.
