He was born at Altoona, Pennsylvania. Removing with the family to Harrisburg, he entered the service of the Harrisburg Foundry & Machine Works as draughtsman. He later held positions with the Pennsylvania Railroad at Altoona; with other corporations at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Jersey City, New Jersey; was chief draughtsman of the New York Air Brake Company at Watertown, New York; and later was a member of the examining board of the Baldwin Locomotive Works, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
