General Notes: Husband - Robert Lytle

He was a native of Scotland, on coming to America, at the age of fifteen years, he settled in western Pennsylvania, where on February 26, 1780, he entered land in what is now Jefferson township, lying along the line between Allegheny and Washington counties.

He was born in Scotland, his family removing to Ireland when he was fifteen years old. Being dissatisfied he ran away from home at that age, and came to America, locating in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, which at that time was on the extreme border of civilization. He there grew up to manhood, and married. After marriage he and his wife came to Allegheny County, and patented 415 acres of land on the waters of Peters creek. The tract was called Littleton, for which the patent was granted December 11, 1784. To them were born fourteen sons and one daughter.

The first of the Lytle name came from Ireland to western Pennsylvania, settling in what was then a tangled wilderness, now Snowden Township, Allegheny County. They were killed by the Indians and the survivors were Robert Lytle and a sister. Robert lived on what later became the Sheplar farm, married and reared a family.

The corn-crop was the important one in early days, and it is related of Robert Lytle that during a year when the crop had been a general failure he fortunately had an immense yield, which was eagerly sought for by the speculators of that vicinity, but he resolutely declined all proposals from them and reserved it for the benefit of his less fortunate neighbors, and when they called for corn they were supplied, with or without money.

General Notes: Wife - Ann Mason

She was a member of the early historic Mason family of western Pennsylvania, whose family, except herself and a little brother, was killed by the Indians on Sewickley Creek. The two children were left homeless and went to the Markle Block House and were reared by the Markle family.
