General Notes: Husband - James White
During the earlier years of his life he was engaged in farming, settling in Jacksonville, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, in 1865. During the Civil War he bought horses and mules for the government, and after the return of peace naturally turned to the general handling of cattle and livestock. About 1890 he began handling coal lands, through Pennsylvania, and in West Virginia, in which he was very successful, handling upwards of fourteen thousand acres. In 1891, through the failure of the bank of Peter Pool and Sons, in Irwin, he lost practically his entire fortune. By the assistance of friends he was enabled to resume business, and in a short space of time more than regained the lost competence. He was a Democrat in politics and an attendant of the United Presbyterian church.
