He was a direct descendant of George Maris (b. 1632, d. 1705), of Grafton Flyford, county of Worcester, England, and Alice, his wife (d. 1699), who, with their six children, emigrated to the Province of Pennsylvania in 1683, and settled in Springfield township, Delaware County. He was one of the justices of Chester County, a member of the General Assembly and of the Provincial Council, and a minister of the Society of Friends. He purchased the "Home," direct from William Penn.
