General Notes: Husband - Capt. Cassius Clay Markle

He received his primary and academic education in the common schools of his native county. He then took a business course at the Iron City Business College, of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. August 25, 1861, he entered the Union army as a lieutenant of Company E, One Hundred and Fifth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and rose to the rank of captain, and served as provost marshal under General Birney, and later made inspector of forts north of the Potomac river. He was honorably discharged September 3, 1864. Upon his return from the war, he actively engaged in the extensive operations of C. P. Markle & Company, and subsequently was made a member of the firm of C. P. Markle & Sons. After the retirement from that position of his father, the management of their extensive paper- and coke-works devolved chiefly upon him. He retired from his West Newton business in 1889, and for three years thereafter was engaged in the business of contracting, during which time he built the sewerage system in many of the Pacific coast cities, and was the builder of the water works in Salt Lake City. He was a Republican in politics.
