His parents were residents of Plum township, Venango County, PA, moving to Hydetown when he was 12 years of age. At that time Hydetown was composed of a log house and a saw mill, owned by Charles Hyde, who was engaged in the lumbering trade, the land surrounding the settlement being heavily covered with pine and hemlock timber• For a period covering thirty years Mr. Marsh followed the life of a woodsman, when, choosing a less strenuous occupation, he purchased a farm a short distance south of Titusville.
