General Notes: Husband - Benjamin F. Welty

He was the eldest in a family of three children. After receiving such an education as the schools of the time afforded, he engaged in farming, distilling and milling, and by industry and energy was successful. Mr. Welty manufactured a brand of whisky "Welty Whisky," which had been handed down from one generation to another since 1798, and for medical purposes his rye and malt whiskies could not be excelled.
He was a Republican, and served as school director, judge of elections, auditor and assessor. The family attended the services of the German Baptist Church.

He attended the common schools, and when about twenty-one years of age, he went with an uncle John Welty to Washington County, Maryland, and learned the distilling business. In 1865 the family removed to Washington township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and located on a farm east of the later residence of Mr. Welty, and the site of his distillery, about one and one-half miles southeast of Waynesboro.
In 1880 Mr. Welty began distilling, operating the old Downey distillery for two years, and he then purchased his own farm from his father, on which stood an old stone mill, over one hundred years old, and consequently but poorly supplied with appliances. Mr. Welty immediately began to make improvements, introducing the latest machinery, including rolls and a gyrating system of bolting, he being the first man in the Cumberland Valley to introduce rolls. The mill had a daily capacity of fifty barrels, the brand being "Our Pride," a strictly high class flour. In 1882 Mr. Welty erected a distillery, adjoining the mill, and began operating it in the spring of 1883, and ran the two in combination. The daily capacity of the distillery was about twenty-five bushels, or 300 barrels annually of the special brand, "Welty Whiskey." This celebrated whiskey was in great demand, and he sold both at wholesale and retail.
Mr. Welty was the owner of a good farm of about eighty acres.
In 1890 Mr. Welty was elected by the Republican party of Franklin County to the State Legislature, and he served during the session of 1891-2. He was again elected to that body in 1900, and served during 1901-2. For many years he served on the school board. Mr. Welty was one of the incorporators of the People's National Bank of Waynesboro, and one of its directors; and was also a director of the Landis Machine Company. [BAFC, 320]
