He was eight years old when his parents settled on the farm near Hillsville, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, and all his subsequent life was passed there, excepting the time spent at Poland Seminary, Poland, Ohio, and the short trips made necessary by business. His neighbors were all friends whom he had known from childhood. In electing him to the office of justice of the peace for a term of five years, they proved their confidence in his ability and integrity.
He and his wife were members of the Baptist Church at Hillsville. In his political views he was a Republican.
