General Notes: Husband - Dr. John H. Martin

He was educated at Thiel College, Greenville, and Westminster College, Wilmington, Lawrence County, PA, and read medicine in his father's office. He graduated at the Eclectic Medical Institute, Cincinnati, Ohio, June 3, 1879, and at once associated himself in practice with Dr. W. C. Brittain, of Cochranton, Crawford County, a former student in his father's office. He practiced there and at Utica, Venango County, five years, and then spent about one year in the Homoeopathic Medical College and Hospital, of Chicago, IL, where he graduated February 25, 1885. The failing health of his father necessitated his return to Greenville, where to a large extent he took charge of his father's business. The Doctor was a member of the Masonic and I. O. O. F. fraternities, and a warm adherent of the Republican party. After opening an office at Greenville he built up a large practice, and was also surgeon-in-chief of the Pittsburgh, Shenango & Lake Erie Railroad. [HMC 1888, 814]

He received his early education in the public schools, and completed his literary training at Thiel College, Greenville, Pennsylvania, and Westminster College, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. He then entered the Eclectic Medical College of Cincinnati, Ohio, from which he was graduated with the class of 1879. He also attended the Chicago Homeopathic Medical College and Hospital, graduating therefrom February 25, 1885. On account of the failing health of his father, he returned to Greenville and assumed his father's practice, where, with the exception of two years, he thereafter resided. He first practiced medicine at Utica, Venango County, and at Cochranton, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, continuing at these points about five years. He then attended the Chicago. Homeopathic College and located in Greenville, where he successfully engaged in private practice, with the exception of the years 1893-94, when he was in charge of the medical department of Cambridge Springs Sanitarium. He also served ten months in the Spanish-American war as captain of Company K, Fifteenth Pennsylvania Volunteers, being subsequently major and commissary of subsistence, Second Brigade. In April, 1902, he received his commission as postmaster at Greenville, and was re-appointed April 13, 1906. Politically, the doctor was a Republican. He was a member of the Mercer County Medical Society, the State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He was among the prominent members of the Greenville Masonic lodge.
