After attending the public schools he entered the Greensburg Academy, completing his studies in Peirsol's Academy. Leaving school he was for four years a teacher in the public schools in different parts of Beaver County, Pennsylvania. After a course in the Military Academy of Western Pennsylvania, (later a part of the University of Pittsburgh,) whence he was graduated in 1890, he completed the study of medicine and in April, 1890, came to Leetsdale, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where he was a medical practitioner. His medical associations were those of the county and state, and in local affairs he held the offices of school director and councilman. His fraternity was the Masonic Order.
