After his father's death, he and his mother, in conjunction with his uncle, G. W. Wilson, carried on the mercantile business in which his father was engaged at the time of his death. Later they rented the store to a Mr. Reicard of Franklin, Pennsylvania, when John and his mother removed to Duke Center.
