General Notes: Husband - Jacob Mathias

After leaving his father's farm he removed to a farm near Madison, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and for a number of years engaged in the milling business in that town. From thence he moved to Manor Station, Pennsylvania, in 1878, associating himself with Dominick Fry in the distillery, under the firm name of Fry & Mathias. In 1882 they built a large new distillery which was burned to the ground in May of the following year, but they immediately rebuilt and continued business as before until 1885 when Mr. Frey, the senior member of the firm, died and Mr. Mathias assumed control of the entire business. In 1886 he associated with him his son Joseph, and A. J. Good, and later his son, Jacob, Jr., and this connection continued until his death. At this plant was manufactured the celebrated old rye whiskey called "Old Westmoreland," which had a wide reputation. Jacob Mathias was also a contractor and builder in connection with his other lines of business, erecting many of the school houses and barns in and about Madison, Westmoreland County. He erected a mill and store building in Madison, conducting both lines of business, milling and mercantile, for several years. His son John assisted in the store and his son Joseph in the mill. Mr. Mathias was a staunch Democrat all his life, but never sought or held political office, preferring to devote his time to his business and home.
