On reaching his majority upon began for himself on a rented farm, and later became the owner of land and an extensive dealer in cattle and sheep, buying them in Mercer County, PA, driving and selling them in
the eastern markets.
He was nominated by the Democrats for sheriff of Mercer County in 1866, and was defeated by a small majority.
