General Notes: Husband - [Ancestor] McCandless

The MacCandlish families of the West Highlands of Scotland were descendants of a man named Candlish. This Candlish had considerable property and the numerous branches of his family perpetuated his name with slight spelling variations. Since "Mac" means "son of", there was MacCandless, Mac Candles, Mac Andless, McAnlis, McCandlis or McCandless. All of these were pronounced in the broad Scot "MacCanlay", which resembles the French pronunciation and shows French influence then evidenced in Scotland.

Between 1675 and 1700 a young West Highland chieftain named Candlish McCandlish married a daughter of the powerful Buchanan family of Buchanan Castle, Loch Lomond, Scotland. They had seven sons. During these twenty-five years there were religious and political differences between England and Scotland, which caused Candlish McCandlish and six of his sons to leave Scotland for Ireland, landing in Belfast before 1715. Each son acquired property: two in County Antrim, two in County Derry and two in County Donegal.
