He lived at the “Hermitage”, original home of the first William McCandless of Center Township, Butler County, PA. The house in which he lived was built in 1836 to replace the original log cabin which stood directly downhill from the exceptionally good spring which supplied the early settlers and still in his day supplied an adequate amount of pure water to serve all farm needs.
