General Notes: Husband - Nathan Fish McCandless


He had nine children with his first wife, and at least two with the second.
Residing in 1883 on a farm in Centre Township, Butler County, PA, which was settled very early, and christened "The Garden."

He was reared on the family home­stead, and at the age of thirty his father gave him 100 acres of the home farm, which he subsequently cleared and improved. He resided on this place for more than sixty years. He was a member of the Pres­byterian church, and a ruling elder in that body for many years. In 1875 he was a prime mover in the erection of the Unionville church, and gave liberally of his means toward that purpose. In early life a Whig, he joined the Republican party upon its formation, and filled the office of justice of the peace for thirty years. He was one of the leading farmers of Cen­tre township, was extensively engaged in settling estates, and a progressive, public-spirited man.

In 1876 it was said that Squire Nathan McCandless owned one of the most valuable collec­tions of books in Butler County, each book being a classic.

He died in 1890. [HBC 1909, 627]. He died in 1891. [HBC 1895, 1071]
