He was a native of Ireland, emigrated in the year 1784 to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and settled in Penn's valley in the year 1792. He was educated in the faith and doctrine of the Christian religion as held by the Presbyterians, and continued firmly attached to that church until his death.

He was an early settler of Potter Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania.
